Sunglasses? check! iPod? check! Towel, flip-flops and hat? Check, check, check! You think you remembered everything until those hunger pangs strike and you’re left with limited options (and by that we mean processed convenience store snacks and daiquiris at the bar). Plan ahead, though, and you’ll be snacking happy during all of summer’s beach days, feeling fab (and satisfied) in that bikini of yours!
If you crave CRUNCHY, try…
Chips and Dip. The chips with dip at the local convenience store may be loaded with trans-fat, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring your own healthy version instead. Toss brown rice cakes or spelt pretzels in a Tupperware container (they’ll get crushed in a Ziploc!) and bring along either packets of all-natural peanut butter or hummus for your dip!
Kale Chips. If you think that a day at the beach isn’t complete without a bag of Lay’s, think again, and make these homemade kale chips. Just toss washed and dried kale pieces in olive oil and bake until crispy! They’re healthy, satisfying and delicious!
Trail Mix. Make your own nut mix by tossing almonds, cashews, pistachios, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, cacao nibs, goji berries, shredded coconut and a dash of sea salt in a Ziploc bag. Just shake and serve! Want to bulk it up without making it too calorically dense? Add a whole grain or brown rice cereal to the mixture too!
If SWEETS have you smitten, stash some…
Frozen Fruit Snacks. The night before you head to the beach, put fresh cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mango cubes and grapes in a Tupperware and place it in the freezer overnight. Before you head out to door toss it in a cooler for a refreshingly sweet treat that will have you happily passing on the Mr. Softee truck. (Feeling creative? Use frozen fruit in lieu of ice cubes to chill and sweeten you ice water.)
Lara Bars. When looking for a snack bar, the ingredient list is key, which is why we love Lara bars with their limited (and lovely!) list of healthy ingredients. Toss a few in your beach bag for a candy-bar like snack that’s nothing short of a nutritious!
Granola. Whip up our very own Latham Thomas’ healthy granola recipe for a sweet treat sure to satisfy. Want to make more of a meal out of it? Many beach-side shops will sell yogurt you can mix it with!
