While studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, there were many speakers on many different topics. One day David Wolfe spoke about avocados, sprouts and the importance of eating only raw food, which is food cooked under 118 degrees. The next week I would hear from about the amazing effects of consuming organ meats, marrow in soups, cod liver oil and raw milk during pregnancy to produce a child with straight teeth! So, you can just imagine that all I wanted to do was experiment, see for myself and observe the effects.

I tried to go vegan (no meat, or dairy, eggs, honey), didn’t work for me. I also tried to go Vegetarian (no meat, fish, animal products) and didn’t work for me either. I was so emotionally, physically and mentally weak at one point that I needed to just have some meat and fish. And once I did, I regained my energy and happy thoughts! While I really don’t eat much dairy anymore and although I have always had an aversion to eating chicken, turkey and some meat, unless its grass-fed, free-range, organic or from a farm that I am knowledgable about, my recent visit to the  Farm Sanctuary in Woodstock really did me in! Its very difficult to eat a piece of chicken, goat milk yogurt, or even an omelette once you see animals making their noises and rolling in the mud and flapping their feathers and hearing about how an egg is a chicken’s period. The following photos I took at the Farm Sanctuary in Woodstock:

This Thanksgiving, instead of eating turkey, I decided to adopt a turkey. You can too at http://www.adoptaturkey.org/aat/adopt/sponsor.html. Here’s a picture of Velma, the turkey I adopted.

Velma, my turkey!

Please note that everyone is made up of their own blood, skin, organs and everyone can make their own choices. We all have our own bio-individuality. What works for you may not work for me and what works for me, may not work for you. Be thankful for the food you have on the table. Be thankful that you are able to chew and eat and swallow. And Be thankful for the people that you surround yourself with. Eat to nourish your body, exercise to nourish your body and think positive thoughts to nourish your soul.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Be Good to yourself. Be Good to others. Be Thankful. Be Well.

Growing up in Manhattan, I often feel the urge to do “country things” – breathe in fresh air, look at lush trees, eat crisp apples, and drive around in a car.

This past Saturday was absolutely gorgeous. Although I sort of wished I went to the Hamptons with my parents, I ended up staying in the city and found the “country” i was craving right here!

After eating stewed peaches with almonds at this cute, hipster, country-ish looking spot in Noho called The Smile, my boyfriend and i took a bus trip to the Central Park Zoo. After passing by lots of tourists, mini- waterfalls, trees, face-painted kids and horses, we paid our $12.00…worth of monkeys, birds, cheetahs, polar bears, ants, sea lions and cute kids walking around with their parents.

Here are some pictures recapping our fun:

After the zoo, I went to the Union Square Farmers Market, bought a fresh country apple and some raw home-made kimchee and ate while watching the energetic street performers dance around.

NY is not only made up of taxis, loud noises, garbage and anxious people. There is a relaxing “country” atmosphere (even cheetahs and penguins!)- you just need to search for it and take advantage of it!

Be willing. Be adventurous. Be happy.

Eat, Pray, Love Camp (for adults)

by Arielle J on August 3, 2010

If you’re looking for a get-away, go to Kripalu. Located in Lenox, Massachusetts atop a mountain, Kripalu is camp for adults…literally. It offers healthy and delicious food, like-minded positive people, a spa with Ayurvedic treatments, unlimited yoga classes, a clear, crisp lake, kayaking, trees, grass, evening activites (like yoga dance) and even bunkbeds (if you choose the cheap lodging option)!

I went to hear Gabrielle Bernstein lecture but you can go just for a little R and R, or there are special guest speakers every weekend too.

I was smiling every minute that I was there and I’m still feeling high, even three days since I returned. Go- alone, with a friend, with your lover. Just go. Enough said.

Savasana!

Passing by Lululemon the other day, I noticed through the window their huge calendar of events. I spotted yoga- Tuesday morning 10-11am yoga in Bryant Park. Outdoor yoga? My favorite. I needed to run some errands in the jewelry district anyway and my best friend, Keri was available too.

As the sun rose, we did our sun salutations and tree poses amidst the trees of Bryant Park and the midtown skyline. It was the perfect start to a Tuesday.

Every Tuesday morning, 10-11am
Every Thursday night, 6-7pm

Patriotic Popsicles

by Arielle J on July 8, 2010

This July 4th i stayed at my friend’s beautiful house in Wainscott, NY. The forecast said 98 degrees, so I knew we needed to find a creative way to stay cool and refreshed!

As a thank you for having me, I brought them popsicle makers. After searching high and low- Bed, Bath and Beyond ran out of them and The Container Store doesnt even carry them- I found the cutest ones at the Limelight Marketplace on 20th and 6th ave! They even came with a cute star-shaped stand.

For our Patriotic Popsicle creations, we made one with Orange Juice, one with Cranberry Juice, one with Pomegranate Juice and another with Lemonade. I stuck Blueberries and Strawberries in them too to add to the red, white and blue theme! A sweet, refreshing, delicious and healthy summer treat.

This picture was taken in their beautiful “Zen Garden”.

Be cool. Be zen. Be well.

Sunny D vs. Fresh Smoothies made by me!

by Arielle J on June 15, 2010

Be Well with Arielle trekked to Harlem today to teach 2nd graders at P.S. 161 how Smart and Healthy Choices = Smart and Healthy Kids!

My best friend, Joanna (otherwise known as Ms. Loewi in the classroom) is a 2nd grade teacher at P.S. 161 – Don Pedro Albizu Campos School on 133rd and Amsterdam. She’s been asking me to come into school and teach her students about healthy eating and healthy choices and today I finally made it in!

We taught them about what making a “smart choice” means and then asked them to draw their favorite healthy snack food and favorite unhealthy snack food. See below for a few examples of what they drew (i had to cover their faces and names in the photos for privacy purposes!)

We then asked what they want to be when they grow up. A few mentioned that they wanted to become firefighters, teachers, models, policemen and pilots so we spoke about the importance of nourishing their bodies with healthy ingredients so they can become these professionals who need lots of energy!

We then studied the ingredients in their favorite “fruit juice”, Sunny D (which I found out is primarily made of Water, High fructose Corn Syrup etc – UGH) and we made our own Sunny D – measuring 4 tsps of sugar, adding in some orange food coloring and water. The children made faces.

We then made the healthier, do-it-yourself option – a fresh fruit smoothie. I shlepped a blender, bunches of bright yellow bananas, fresh and frozen strawberries and pineapple Vita Coco coconut water. Voila! (Most of them said that the blender looked familiar and they have them at home so hopefully they’re enthusiam will trickle into the night and their next supermarket run with their parents/guardien.)

The students were amazed at how fruit turned into juice in the matter of 12 seconds (Mississippi seconds!) and were quite disgusted as we measured teaspoon after teaspoon of sugar into the orange food coloring.

The students LOVED helping, learning and tasting and we put the smoothie recipe handout in all of their backpacks and also included a recipe for “Smart Kid Kookies”- made with almond flour, agave and dark chocolate chips.

What a success! Can’t wait for my next Healthy Kids demo!

Be Smart. Be Creative. Be Well.

Holiday Lookbook Event Tomorrow!

by Arielle J on June 9, 2010

Be Well with Arielle is heading to the Metropolitan Pavilion tomorrow to showcase the iloveme collection to the press! Queen of Green Style Expert Gina La Morte, Editor In Chief of Boho Magazine will be there to present the latest eco-conscious gift ideas and Style and Beauty Expert, Jenn Falik will be there hosting.

Wish me luck- inside and out!

{ Comments on this entry are closed }

So im on a mission to be green and natural from the inside-out. Been buying natural body soap, tampons, lotions, toothpaste, toilet paper, dishwasher detergent – even the materials in my jeWELLry are eco-conscious and the packaging and shipping supplies I use are recyclable! Believe it or not, somehow I forgot to change up my face wash regimen, though and just realized this morning! My bottle of facewash was turned around this morning and I noticed that its full of parabens. Oh no! But I’ve been using it for 12 years, it’s the perfect texture, makes my skin feel so soft and it’s just my favorite! Need to find an alternative. ASAP.

This got me thinking…We need to read ingredients in EVERYTHING!

Go into your cupboard today and look at the ingredients in your bread. Look at the back of your frozen yogurt, salad dressing, oatmeal, cereal, tomato sauce, chocolate bar- even your ketchup. How many ingredients does it have? Is the first ingredient a good representation of the what it is? Can you pronounce all of the ingredients? Does it have added unnecessary vitamins and minerals? Does it have corn syrup??? Read more about corn syrup here: http://civileats.com/2009/01/27/is-high-fructose-corn-syrup-turning-us-into-mad-hatters/ )

Reading ingredients (rather than nutrition facts) is one of the biggest educational tools that I learned at Integrative Nutrition, not to mention that it changed my ENTIRE way of eating and my food choices.

What we think is “healthy” and good for us may not as “healthy” as you think. Cereals and breads advertised as “Whole Grain” may not be fully whole wheat. Your “Quinoa Pasta” may not be fully made out of quinoa (the first ingredient is actually corn flour) and your ketchup (which by the way, the USDA claims is a vegetable), may have corn syrup and sugar added to it!

Just because it’s in a healthfood store or Whole Foods (it is, hands down, my favorite store), it may not be a healthy food. Check the ingredients. Be a smart shopper.

Rule of thumb- ingredients are listed in descending order so the first ingredient is what mainly comprises the food/product.

Yes, food has calories and fat grams and sodium and fiber and nutrition facts are important. But, your body can’t distinguish numbers. It digests food, the ingredients in a food- what the food is comprised of. Do you want to feel energized? Are you tired of feeling sluggish? Do you want to feel light? The ingredients are what matters. Read them- you’ll be amazed at what is in some of your favorite brands and foods.

What you eat becomes your cells. Your cells become your blood. Your blood flows through your organs, your tissues and your brain. Your brain creates your dreams and emotions. What you eat- the ingredients- becomes you.

Reading ingredients not only to your bread, ice-cream and jam…you need to read what you’re putting onto your body too. What you put onto your body not only affects your external- skin- it can also travel to your blood and affect the way you feel.

Read the back of your body cream. Read the back of your facewash. Does it have parabens? If so, I would recommend tossing. Check out the following article on why:
http://thebeautybean.com/site/pamper/going-green-13-ways-to-pamper-more-responsibly/

I want to glow inside and out. Im on a mission to find the best natural products from deodorants (ah! Its been hard!), toothpaste, body wash and eye, face and body creams to clothing. Please share your favorites.

Taking care of yourself isnt just about eating well and exercising; be conscious of what you put in you and on you!

Be Green. Be Smart. Be Well.

focus, meditate, manifest!

by Arielle J on June 2, 2010

Spent Memorial Day in the Hamptons with 8 girlfriends and had the best time- we laughed with each other and at each other, danced on the beach, snacked on watermelon, tanned wearing spf 55!,  sang to Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” and slept LOTS!

I often dread coming back to the city- the noise, the hustle and bustle and the thought of just getting back into my daily routine- working, etc but Gabrielle and I set a date for her to interview me the day I got back so i def had something to look forward to! Whenever I’m with her, she inspires me to believe in myself, work my hardest, focus and just keep on going.

Check out the interview with Gabrielle Bernstein to learn how I focused, manifested and believed in myself to create the iloveme collection!

Let your smile become someone else’s smile.

Put two of my favorite things together- tea and quotes = My favorite brand of tea, Yogi Tea.

My quote of the today today was :”Be so happy that when others look at you they become happy too” – Yogi Tea!

Which brought me to the idea of happiness. What can you do to make yourself happy today?

Here are a few ideas: Take a walk to your nearby park. Notice the flowers in bloom. Smell the flowers. Watch people walk by. Smile. Read a book. Read through a magazine. Make a collage. Say thank you. Listen to your favorite song. Maybe, on repeat? Take a trip to your favorite restaurant/dessert place. Buy a cone for the person in line. . (My favorite is Lulas Sweet Apothecary on 516 E 6th St (between Avenue A & Avenue B) – they make soy and cashew-based ice-cream. YUM.) Give yourself a manicure. Go get a manicure. Paint your nails a crazy color. Take your favorite yoga class. Get a massage. Give yourself a massage. Smile. Buy yourself flowers. Buy someone else flowers. Volunteer. Bake something sweet and healthy and delicious. Cook. Smile.Make yourself tea. Sit on a park bench and watch the world walk by. Smile. Write an email to a friend. Write a card. Write yourself a card and send it! Call a friend. Sing. Look at old photographs. Save your leftovers and give it to a homeless person to enjoy. Jot down your favorite thins in life. Just Smile.

Be happy. Be fun. Be Well.

Nutz about Nuts!

by Arielle J on May 17, 2010

I am nutz about nuts. Have always LOVED raw almonds, I grew up with parents who LOVED pistachio ice-cream and  I could’ve eaten a bag of honey-roasted peanuts any day of the week.

In college, my neighbor generously offered his Costco-size container of honey-roasted peanuts and it was then that I realized that I had a huge allergy to peanuts! I think my stomach hurt for weeks after and my roommate, Julie had to hold her nose every time she walked in!

Many people have allerges to peanuts- from mild stomach reactions to serious anaphylactic shock (hence why schools have become nut-free). I do love peanuts, but after that experience, I just couldnt bare eating them anymore. I always wondered my stomach felt funny every time after I ate them..

While I was going to Integrative Nutrition, I went to this raw chocolate party with David Wolfe (the guru behind the raw food industry) and someone recommended that I order the special “Wild Jungle Peanut Butter” from the Amazon. It apparently doesn’t have aflatoxin, a group of toxins, which is found in commercial peanuts and peanut butter. You can find it at  (www.sunfood.com). This peanut butter treated my stomach far better than peanuts or peanut butter but still I opt for my ultimate favorite nut-butter which is the raw almond butter or the macadamia nut butter that I bought in Thailand, or the Roasted Almond Butter that I grind myself at Whole Foods. (Check out the Natural Foods Store near you because they may have a grind-your-own peanut or almond butter station.)

Sunfood.com's Wild Jungle Peanut Butter

In any case, on my way home from work Friday, I passed by the street vendor on 19th and 6th avenue stir-frying his peanuts and the aroma stuck with me the rest of the way home. I just couldnt resist not making my own version as soon as I got home. I had also bought a container of Date Syrup  last week at the Natural Foods Store (ingredients: Organic Dates and Water) and was wondering what I was going to make with it, so this was just a perfect treat and recipe of the night.

Organic Date Syrup

DATE GLAZED BRAZIL NUTS:

Ingredients:

– NUTS: (brazil, almond, cashew, walnut, pecan, peanut)

– SWEETNER: (maple syrup, agave, date syrup, raw honey)

– OIL/BINDER: (toasted sesame oil, olive oil, coconut oil, Earth Balance) optional

– COOKING TECHNIQUE: (bake or toast or broil or pan-“fry”)

– OPTIONAL ADD ONS: dash of sea salt, cinnamon, maple sugar, cayenne pepper

Depending on the desired taste will determine what nuts and oil and add-ons you use. If you’re looking for a more toasted-roasted flavor, I would drizzle a little bit of the toasted sesame oil. Coconut Oil may make the snack a little greasy, but it always adds a sweet and nutty flavor. If you’re looking for sweet, I would add some cinnamon and cayenne to bring out the sweetness. Also, depending on how much time you have and your desired taste, the cooking technique will vary. It took me about 3 minutes to “fry” the nuts in the pan, but I’ve also heard baking them in the oven at about 350 degrees will produce perfection.

As usual, since I don’t measure ingredients, I just put a handful of brazil nuts and almonds in a bowl, added some date syrup and mixed. I spread them out on the pan, added a dash of sea salat and Voila! Deliciousness that took 3 minutes to prepare and cook in total, not too much mess and not to mention, satisfied my sweet and crunchy craving perfectly. I also saved 4$, a blood-sugar spike and a paper bag from buying it on the street!

Date-glazed Brazil Nuts!

No need to spend big bucks on those fancy-already-packaged containers and no need to buy the the honey-roasted peanuts on the street (although it’s hard to resist when you walk by the aroma from the street vendor). Make it yourself!

Be Creative. Be Adventurous. Be Well.

by Arielle J on May 4, 2010

Despite the nasty early- May weather, I went to sleep last night feeling positive and woke up this morning remembering some fabulous vivid dreams.

To start off the day with sweetness and energy, I made myself a “Strawberry- Banana Dreamsicle’. I usually dont opt for cliche things (blah nail polish colors, trendy jewelry or simple smoothies) but was craving something easy and delicious. It ended up satisfying my craving perfectly and giving me energy and motivation to go to the jewelry district so I was very happy!

Mocha Me A Smoothie, please!

by Arielle J on April 27, 2010

Before I knew about the oh-so-popular Vitamix blender, I bought a 30$ blender at Bed, Bath and Beyond and it’s been one of my most-used and favorite household appliances.

For me, smoothies are refreshing, always satisfy my craving for something sweet and creamy and I can make one for breakfast Monday, post-workout on a Thursday and dessert on a Sunday night. I can mix it up depending on my mood/craving/whats in season. I can make them as creamy and chunky and sweet and thick as I want. Smoothies allow me to be creative and fulfilled.

*For measurements: I usually just eye-it. Feel free to add/take-away depending on your mood and taste buds. I encourage you to try different fruit mixtures for different color and taste and textures and to experiment with different bases- coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk, and nut butters too. Come Celebrate Earth Day and BYOC!

by Arielle J on April 23, 2010

In celebration of spring, the gorgeous weather in NY recently and Earth Day, I had a little “GO GREEN” celebration on my gorgeous tree-filled roof last night.

Earth Day (April 22nd) is day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.

I asked each guest to BYOC (bring your own cup!), which was a hit and many people came dressed in green for the occassion!

Here are some picts of us eating our green foods- guac, wasabi peas and celery- while overlooking the GREEN Empire State Building!

Be conscious. Be green. Be well.

Went to the Bronx Zoo today for some jewelry inspiration and guess what I stumbled upon? A tiger, a field of bison, a few swans and…my favorite, a PEACOCK!!!!!!! I still can’t believe my eyes…the bright colors, the amount of feathers, the organization of feathers, the beauty. Truly unbelievable. Really.

I was only there for 40 minutes (we got a late start), so will be going back very soon- especially because it is SO easy to get there. Took the from the corner of 27th and Madison which dropped us off a block from the entrance.

A quick trip, but a gorgeous day, amazing sightseeing and great company (my dad!)
